Secure a PDF file

If you want to limit access to your PDF file, you can apply security settings in Adobe Acrobat. You can require users to enter a password before viewing the document. You can also require a password to copy document contents, print the document, and modify the document.

To secure a PDF file

  1. Open your PDF file in Adobe Acrobat.
  2. On the File menu, click Properties.
  3. Click the Security tab.
  4. In the Security Method list, click Password Security.
  5. Do one or both of the following:

Don't use the same password for both boxes. Otherwise, users who can open the document can also alter the document.

  1. If you selected the Change Permissions Password box, do the following:

    If you have no preference, click High Resolution.

    If you have no preference, click None.

    If you have no preference, leave the check box cleared.

  2. Click OK.
  3. When prompted to confirm your password, type the appropriate password in the box, and then click OK.
  4. When Acrobat informs you that some software may allow access even though you've added password protection, click OK.
  5. Click OK to confirm your security settings.
  6. On the File menu, click Save to store your new permissions inside the PDF file.
